Louis L. Biro Law Library

Reference Services

The Louis L. Biro Law Library Reference Services serves the UIC Law community by providing dynamic guidance, outreach, and instruction regarding the information resources central to the education and research mission of the law school. Reference Librarians respond to the immediate research needs of our patrons and develop our collection, skills, and services in anticipation of the changing legal information environment.

Reference Hours

Reference Assistance

The Reference Desk is staffed by professional librarians who are available to provide help in the use of the library, including assistance in research and location of library materials. Reference questions are answered to the fullest extent possible. However, the library staff cannot give legal advice or offer legal opinions.

Reference librarians are available during normal reference hours at the Reference Desk on the 6th floor by phone at (312) 427-2737 ext. 729, by email at law-library@uic.edu, by appointment, or via chat from the library homepage (use the “Ask a Librarian” chat box in the lower left corner of the screen).

Research Guides and Video Tutorials

The reference department has created a number of electronic research guides and bibliographies to give research guidance on specific topics or on specific library resources. View these guides at the Research Guides page.

The Law Library also offers video tutorials on legal research and on the use of specific databases. The tutorials include tips and updates on current trends in legal research. Watch these videos at our Video Tutorials page.

Research Appointments

Librarians are available to meet with law students in one-on-one sessions (or in small groups) to discuss research strategies, recommend relevant resources, or review specific legal research topics such as legislative history research or administrative law research.

Law School Institutional Repository

Institutional Repositories bring together all of an institution's research under one umbrella, with an aim to preserve and provide access to that research. The UIC Law repository is a service of the UIC Law Library and serves as an online, open access repository for the Law School’s scholarly output.

Materials at Other Libraries

Materials that are not in the library's collection may often be borrowed from or used at other libraries. Students and faculty have access to other local law school libraries through a cooperative arrangement among the law libraries. Visit the Interlibrary Loan FAQ page or contact the Reference Desk for more information.

Government Documents

Since 1981 the Law Library has been a Selective Federal Documents Depository and has acquired many government publications. Many of these documents are in the Research Collection on the 6th floor while others are in the general collection. Assistance with finding and using these documents is available at the Reference Desk.
